It was a great weekend for Moose Jaw’s Control Jiu Jitsu.

The local club sent 14 athletes to the Western Open Kids BJJ competition in Regina on Saturday and they brought back 13 medals in total, including a pair of gold.

"They did amazing, it was a lot of the kids' first Jiu Jitsu matches, so a lot of them were very scared, there was some tears, but they did very, very well," said Control BJJ coach Jason Church.

The martial arts club has been running in Moose Jaw for a few years now with many of the young kids just starting out in the sport.

There's plenty of benefits to hitting the mat and competing, according to Church, "It's a great confidence builder. It helps kids with adversity, self-control and perseverance," he said.
