Trailing by two going into the third period, the Moose Jaw Peewee Mustangs locked down defensively and went to work to mount a championship comeback.

Carter Connolly and Brooklyn Hrynkiw scored in the third and Colton Ebbett potted two in overtime to secure an 8-6 win for the Mustangs over the Swift Current Gold Rampage, capturing the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League championship on Friday night.

"We started from scratch about ten days ago because we kind of got into a funk, so we went back to the basics, we had 4-5 practices in a row, we built right up for this and it seemed to work, the kids seemed to buy in, they were motivated and they played their butts off, so credit to them, they played well," said Mustangs coach Jeremy Ebbett.

The Mustangs led 2-1 after one, but the Gold Rampage struck for five goals in the second period to take a 6-4 advantage into the third period.

Goalie Walker Williams and the Mustangs' defence shut the door on Swift Current in the third period and overtime, holding them off the board and allowing for the comeback.

"This feels really good, this is my second year in a row winning the championship," said Williams.

Williams and Luke Andrews have split every game throughout the season for the Mustangs, which is their fifth year playing together. The duo came up huge for Moose Jaw in the championship win on Friday.

"It was pretty intense in the first period and a half, I had a lot of shots, so it was intense," said Andrews. "It was pretty cool to see Walker make all those saves (down the stretch)."

Ebbett said with both goalies being returnees from last year's provincial championship team, they were expecting good things from them and stood tall when they needed it.

"There was times when we had two players on the floor for some reason, they had two players in front of our net playing catch back-and-forth, so both goalies made some huge saves, sometimes they had to make 4-5 saves in a row, so incredible," he said.

Colton Ebbett finished with a hat trick and five points in the win for the Mustangs, while Aaron Barnett, Dylan Bandet and Kayde Kell also scored in the win.

"Credit to the kids, they were awesome," said Jeremy Ebbett. "This game was everything that we thought it would be, we knew they were going to be tough because they're a good team, we battled them all year, we hadn't beat them yet this year -- they beat us twice, close games, but they beat us -- tonight, we were the better team."

Tyler MacIsaac and Kade Stringer had two goals each for Swift Current in the loss.

The Mustangs will now prepare for the Canada Day Tournament in Calgary next weekend and then they will travel to Estevan for provincials on the following weekend.
