The Moose Jaw Generals faced a tough test on Thursday night and they passed it with flying colours.

The Generals handed the Saskatoon Blazers their first regulation loss of the season as they scored three third-period goals for a 5-2 win at Mosaic Place.

"By far our most complete effort, the boys really competed hard, got some chances, we fired some pucks on net and get to the net, and a good result, they deserved it tonight," said Generals head coach Ray Wareham.

The win was the second straight for Moose Jaw and pushed their record to 5-3-0-0 through eight games this season in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.

Cody Davis led the attack for the Generals, scoring twice, including one just 10 seconds into the third period, which turned a tie game into a one-sided affair for Moose Jaw.

"We played as a team, went there and gave it our all, and came out with a big win," said Davis, who now has seven goals in eight games this season, including back-to-back two-goal games.

The Generals attacked the Blazers’ net throughout the game, posting double-digit shots in each period and increasing their total each period before finishing with 23 shots in the third and 51 overall on the night.

Generals goalie Jaxson Taupert was lights out in goal as well, turning away 35-of-37 shots by Saskatoon.

"The guys were playing with confidence, after [the first] 40 minutes, they felt like they could play with them, they were coming in 8-0-1 and we knew that we hadn’t played our best yet, but tonight we put it together," said Wareham.

"We spent the last two days really breaking down what we wanted to do, we just walked through it in practice and they got a better understanding of it, they executed in the neutral zone pretty good tonight and we knew if we could stop them from gaining our zone with speed, we had a chance and we did that."

Casey McDonald opened the scoring for the Generals only 3:42 into the game with his fifth of the season.

Saskatchewan was able to tie the game up near the midway point of the first when Moose Jaw Warriors draft pick Keenan Allan beat Taupert to make it 1-1.

The Generals were able to reclaim the lead before the end of the first when Davis potted his first of the night on the power play with 4:27 left in the frame.

Josh Nagy evened the game back up early in the second period and the two teams would battle back-and-forth over the rest of the frame before heading into the third tied at 2-2.

Moose Jaw came out of the gates firing in the third period, as Evan Sare rushed the puck up ice off the opening face-off and slid the puck cross-crease to Davis, who buried his second of the game just 10 seconds into the period.

"We were just driving the net and looking to generate," said Davis on the goal to open the third period. "That really got the momentum going for us."

The Generals peppered the Blazers’ net for the rest of the period and eventually put the game away when Steven Kesslering and Ben Wourms-Rowe scored 33 seconds apart late.

One area that the Generals will look to clean up coming out of the game is the power play as they finished 1-for-9 with the man advantage in the win, while also going 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Generals hit the road this weekend as they travel to the Battlefords to take on the Stars on Saturday and Sunday.
