Eleanor retired from teaching in 1983 after battling cancer. In retirement, she tended her garden and flowers. She grew a large garden each year, sharing her bounty with family and friends. Family meant everything to Eleanor. She held annual Easter egg colouring days with her grandchildren and compiled photo albums for her family.

When Walter died in 2002, Eleanor moved to Assiniboia and lived in one of the Jubilee cottages.  She continued to garden and played piano at both The Villa and Ross-Payant Nursing Home. She moved to the Bentley in Moose Jaw in 2014.
