Moose Jaw YMCA's Fairford location has been a bit of a conflicting topic for the Y's board and its members.

Back in June, the board consulted its members about the possibility of moving out of the Fairford location, and it was made clear that some members don't want that.

After this meeting, the YMCA struck a task force to take all the information and concerns the board of directors received at that meeting to create a list of recommendations.

These recommendations will give the board a list of choices on what to do with their ageing location on Fairford Street.

"So this is almost a fifty-year-old facility and when it was built in 1972, the Y was very different in 1972 compared to 2018. There was no conditioning centre back in 1972 so the design would be very, very different than it is today," explained Jeff Fox, Chief Executive Officer for the Moose Jaw YMCA. " There was no licensed child care within the Y back then as well, and that's one of our biggest programs."

This ageing building also comes with a number of repairs, and the recent water main break that flooded their basement didn't help.

The board and the task force haven't made a clear decision yet, but Fox said he does know what they would prefer.

"Ideally [we would like] a brand new YMCA, but it's very very costly to build in today's environment, let alone just buying the land," he said. "Construction is expensive for this type of facility. So we have other plans in mind though."

Once the recommendations are presented to the board of directors, the Y would share this information with the public. Fox explained that the YMCA is a transparent organization, and since the community wants to know what's happening, they will share what information they have.
