The all-Moose Jaw battle went to the White Mustangs on Thursday night.

The White Mustangs knocked off the Red Mustangs, 6-4, at Mosaic Place in the final regular season game for both teams in the Queen City Minor Box Lacrosse League’s bantam division.

“It feels really good,” said White Mustangs forward Brydon Bell. “Were both really good teams.”

Bell picked up a hat trick to help lead the White Mustangs to the win in the back-and-forth low scoring contest.

The White Mustangs led just 1-0 after the first period. The Red Mustangs tied the game up with a goal from Rowan Calvert midway through the second, but Carter Michaluk put the White Mustangs back in front later in the period.

Bell’s first goal came with 55 seconds remaining in the second and gave the White Mustangs a two-goal lead heading into the third.

He extended that lead to 4-1 with his second of the game just before the midway point of the final frame, but Blake Butler answered right back for the Red Mustangs to keep it a two-goal game.

Ethan Johnson cut the lead to just one with 5:59 to go, but Bell completed his hat trick 30 seconds later to restore the two-goal advantage.

Atley Calvert pulled the Red Mustangs back within one with 3:43 left in regulation, but Rhett Chute sealed the win for the White Mustangs with a goal in the final 20 seconds.

“We lost a few bounces and they gained a few,” stated Atley Calvert after the loss. “We’re happy with how we played, but we just didn’t get the bounces tonight.

“We battled back hard and that will make us stronger as a team.”

With the win, the White Mustangs secured second place in the bantam division with a 9-2-1 record, which puts them three points back of the first place Regina Rush.

Bell said that they didn’t panic when the Red Mustangs pulled within one in the third period and just stuck with their game plan.

“We kept the spirits high and just needed to keep our cool and play our game,” said Bell. “That’s pretty important, we need to do that heading into the playoffs.”

The Red Mustangs finish the regular season 7-2-3 and in fourth place.

“This definitely prepares us for when we had into the playoffs,” added Red Mustangs’ Kayde Shymko.

Both teams will head into the postseason next week.
