It's not hard to find a detour right now in Moose Jaw, but we're not the only city experiencing issues when it comes to water main breaks and unforeseen issues popping up.

Our city has now set another record for water main breaks due to aging infrastructure, with crews and contractors trying to stay on schedule.

"We're over... we're at 87, last year we hit 85 and of course we've still got another 3 months to get through," explained Darrin Stephanson, Municipal Operations Manager.

The city saw 14 water main breaks over a ten day stretch last month and that's pushed projects into each other, such as the two projects on Main Street that were not supposed to be done at the same time according to Stephanson.

"Some of the schedules with contractors and stuff didn't line up quite right. City crews are doing the Hall Street project and the significant amount of breaks we had has pushed our schedule into the other schedule, when originally we had intended to be done and out of there."

The troublesome breaks haven't just plagued The Friendly City however; Regina is also seeing similar statistics.

The Queen City is on pace to break their record for water main breaks. Last month, they had 125 compared to 28 in September of 2016.

One of the biggest challenges crews are facing is the cracking of concrete pipes, as shifting ground has put a lot of pressure on them forcing cracks and breaks.
