Vanier Collegiate, Peacock, and Central Collegiate are all on the road this weekend, as they open up the 2022 Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association football season.

Vanier will kick things off on Friday night as they will be travelling to Yorkton for a 5:00 p.m. kickoff. On Saturday, Central Collegiate will be on the road in Swift Current at 1:00 p.m., with Peacock also on the road in Estevan at 2:00 p.m.

There is always excitement when embarking on a new high school football season.

“I think there’s a lot of excitement,” says SHSAA South Central Rural League Football Commissioner, Derrick Huschi. “We’re going into the season not thinking about COVID, and that weighed heavy on us last year when we built schedules and we tried to do a lot of things close to in-house to start with and not a lot of movement playing Moose Jaw teams right off the bat. This year things are opened up.”

“The kids are excited. In talking with the different schools, Central and Peacock have between 50-65 players. Vanier is looking to have around that 40-player mark,” Huschi adds.

All three Moose Jaw high schools began practicing back on Aug. 18. The schools took part in a mini jamboree last weekend to prepare for their season openers.

Vanier, Peacock, and Central will get their taste of home-field advantage next weekend. On Sept 10. Central will host Peacock at 1 p.m., with Vanier taking on Swift Current at 3:15 p.m. Both games take place at Gutheridge Field.

One new addition this year is that there will be more evening games on Thursdays and Fridays.

“We’ve partnered with Moose Jaw Minor Football and we will be running some Thursday and Friday night games at Elks Field.”

The regular season will run until Oct. 15, followed by the league semifinals on Oct. 22, and the league finals on Oct. 29.

The SHSAA provincial semi-finals will begin on Nov. 5, with the finals the following weekend.
