With the 20-year-old deadline approaching next week, the Moose Jaw Warriors sorted out their overage situation on Tuesday by dealing 20-year-old defenceman Brandon Schuldhaus to the Saskatoon Blades.

The Warriors acquired a second-round pick in 2020 and a fifth-round pick in 2019 from the Blades in the deal.

The trade means Moose Jaw will move ahead with goalie Brodan Salmond, forward Tristin Langan, and defenceman Dalton Hamaliuk as overagers this season

"This move allows us to keep our team competitive, particularly on the back-end with (Josh) Brook, (Jett) Woo and Hamaliuk leading the way back there, and with our team in transition, considering the development of our young d -- (Matt) Sanders, (Alek) Sukunda, (Daemon) Hunt, (Drae) Gardiner and so forth -- and the return is good," said Warriors GM Alan Millar.

"Brandon is a great kid, quality young man, he was an important part of our team last year and we thank him for that, and certainly wish him all the best."

Schuldhaus, a Calgary product, was originally acquired by the Warriors from the Red Deer Rebels ahead of the WHL Trade Deadline last season. In that deal, the Warriors added a fourth-round pick in 2020 and gave up second-round picks in 2019 and 2020, as well as defenceman Colin Paradis.

Tuesday's trade helps to recoup some of the assets that the Warriors spent in an attempt to bolster the team for a playoff run.

"We've been aggressive in the marketplace for the last couple of years trying to win and the reality is that along the way, it's important to start acquiring assets for the future and we were able to do that in this deal by banking a five and a very valuable second-round pick down the road," said Millar.

"The big picture in terms of our team is, we want to remain competitive, we want to develop our young players and at the same time, we have to have an outlook on the future in terms of building that next team that contend for a championship, there's a process along the way and gaining future assets is an important part of that."

Langan was a no-brainer overage player for the Warriors after growing up in the team's system and contributing on last year's team, while the addition of Salmond became necessary after Brody Willms went down with an injury. Hamaliuk brings a hard-nosed game, similar to Schuldhaus, and will help with the development of the Warriors' young players on the back-end.

Millar feels the team remains in a strong position with their three 20-year-olds moving forward.

"We know Tristin Langan very well, he's a quality guy that's worked hard to get to where he's at today. Dalton Hamaliuk and Brodan Salmond have come in and their track record, in terms of the information that we got on them, is their high character guys," said Millar.

"Adam Evanoff is a very good 18-year-old goaltender, he's very close to being a number one goalie in the league, but we wanted some mentorship and they're going to give us quality goaltending every night. It will be a real good partnership between the two of them."

The Warriors will return to game action coming up this weekend when they host the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday and the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday.
