Over 1,500 athletes from the far reaches of the province will be at Gutheridge Field for the next two days as Moose Jaw hosts the 2019 SHSAA Track-and-Field Provincial Championships.

The best athletes in the province will be going head-to-head all day Friday and Saturday.

"Everyone is stoked for that," said Central senior Crozier Holmes. "It's really nice that we don't have to travel, so really looking forward to it."

Holmes is among a strong contingent of the local medal favourites.

Cornerstone's Aliyah Block has been setting records in midget girls shot put all season and she has her sights set on gold at provincials.

The grade nine student said it’s going to be a great challenge, "I really like new experiences, so when it's something fresh and new, I get more excited about it and then I unconsciously throw better," said Block. "That will really get me pumped and I'll hopefully throw better."

Many local seniors are looking forward to closing out their high school sports careers at home.

Vanier's Cooper Cole said he's been looking forward to this event all year, "It's really nice, especially to be able to practice where its held and be familiar. It will be cool to be on home court," he said.

The events start at 9 a.m. on Friday morning and day one closes with the 100-metre finals starting at 6:40 p.m. Everything will pick back up on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and the 4x100m and 4x400m relays will finish things off, starting at 4:50 p.m. Click here for the full schedule.
