The Moose Jaw Peewee A Warriors had a good Saturday in Odessa.

The local squad went in and won all three of their games, including a 2-1 win over the Regina Shamrocks in the final, to take the Prairie Storm Peewee A Tournament over the weekend.

“The team was very excited,” said head coach John McLean. “It was an early season tournament and it was a pretty good team building day. They had two really close games that they battled back in both games, so it was really good to see.”

The Warriors opened the tournament with a narrow 3-2 win over the Regina Mustangs, led by Jake McLean with a goal and two points. Kirkland Mullen and Rhett May had the other goals for Moose Jaw in the win.

The second round robin game was no where near as close with the Warriors rolling to a 7-0 win over the Strasbourg/Southey Marlins. Mullen led the way in this win with a goal and three points, while Evan Osberg and Julian Steinke each had two goals.

“It was a long day, we played at ten, two and then eight o'clock at night,” said McLean. “They were a little tired at the end, but gritted out the final for sure.”

The final was a battle between the Warriors and Shamrocks with the game tied at 1-1 until late in the third period when Jake McLean scored to give Moose Jaw the lead. After that goal, the long day didn't matter any more for the team.

“It was amazing to see them fly on the ice at the end,” said John McLean. “You could see after that goal, the kids really gained a lot of energy and played hard down the stretch, so it was awesome.”

The season has been going well for the Warriors so far, but McLean said they found another gear in this tournament.

“We really pressured teams pretty well,” he said. “We had the fore check going, worked hard on the back check, we played a pretty big team in the first game, but didn't back down at all. It was a lot of hard work and determination for sure.”

In league play, the Warriors have went 4-0-1 over their past five games and will look to build off this tournament as they get set for a bigger tournament this coming weekend with a trip down to Bismark, North Dakota.

“It's a 12-team tournament down there, so we play on Friday down there and we'll hopefully build on the success of this weekend,” said McLean.
