The Moose Jaw Mallards put together a strong weekend overall at the Regina Bantam AA Baseball Tournament.

Moose Jaw went 4-1 with their lone loss coming to Parkland, 4-0, in the final on Sunday.

"They really clicked and came together," said Mallards coach Curtis O’Reilly of the team's play over the weekend. "Our pitching has been strong all year, defence has been hit-and-miss sometimes and the hitting went quiet for a couple games, but its all come back now and they're firing on all cylinders."

Offensively the Mallards were rolling in their first four games before running into a quality pitcher for Parkland in the final. Moose Jaw scored double digit runs in all four of their wins.

They started the weekend with a 10-0 win over the Regina Buffalos on Friday night and then followed that up with a 14-4 win over the Saskatoon A's on Saturday.

Moose Jaw played three games on Sunday, topping Swift Current 15-5 in the morning and then knocking off White Butte, 14-4, to secure their spot in the final.

"The boys were hitting the ball and they were making the adjustments at the plate that we've been trying to teach them about up until this point and they're seeing the ball well and really squaring it up," said O’Reilly. "I haven’t had a chance to look at the slugging numbers, but I image the slugging percentages are pretty good because there was a lot of extra base hits.”

The Mallards couldn't keep the offence rolling in the final as they were no-hit by Parkland to finish in second place.

"They have a player on their team that made Team Sask 15U, so amongst the best bantam aged players in the province and he was on the hill for them, not that we can't beat him and match up with him, but it is quite a challenge and was quite strong," said O’Reilly.

"The boys battled, they had good at-bats and we're looking forward to seeing him again."

We're nearing the midway point of the season for the Mallards and O’Reilly said that he's seeing a lot of progress out of the team and looking for that growth to continue throughout the rest of the year.

"We're developing these young men into even better ball players than they already were when they showed up and we're advancing ahead," he said.

"We're tracking excellent, we have real good kids, great attitudes, eager to learn, up to the challenge and they're showing the progress that we're looking for and we're going to peak at the right towards the end of the tournament."

The Mallards are back on the field on Wednesday when they travel to Regina to square off with the Blue Jays. First pitch is at 6:15 p.m.
