For the 17th consecutive Canada Day, local runners gathered in Wakamow Valley for the annual Moose Jawg Charity Road Race.

The annual event featured 280 runners competing the five-kilometre and 10-kilometre races to kickstart our nation's birthday, while also raising funds for the Moose Jaw Health Foundation.

Moose Jaw's Mike Tighe continued his dominance in the 10K, winning for the third straight year with a time of 37:36.

Andrea Amiot of Moose Jaw came in eighth overall and was the top finisher in the women's 10K, posting a time of 42:38.

"The course is tough because it's a double loop, so you have to cross the finish line and then go back at it, so there's a little bit of a mental challenge that way, but it's good," said Amiot.

"This is my 12th or 13th year doing it and it's always a great morning, it's a great little family thing to do to start your day off good and get ready for the rest of it."

Regina's Matthew Johnson claimed top spot in men's 5K, edging out his Cougar teammate Marc Turmel by three seconds with a time of 15:52.

"We train together and push each other, so it's fun to see who's feeling good today and I was just lucky that I was feeling pretty good today," said Johnson

Johnson added that the competition is always really good at the Moose Jawg, "There's a big crowd of good athletes here and that makes for a good race," he said.

The runners will work their way through the course in Wakamow Valley and Johnson said it can be a challenge.

"It's usually around that halfway point where it gets really tough because you're getting really tired because you're almost there and you just really have to push," said Johnson.
