Going 18 years strong, it's a part of the fabric of the community and raises money for a great cause.

Counsellor Dawn Luhning said that the event was originally started as a fun event, but they definitely get some men and women that run 5 km in 14 minutes.

Last year's annual event had 280 runners competing in the five-kilometre and 10-kilometre races to kickstart our nation's birthday, while also raising funds for the Moose Jaw Health Foundation.
The Runt Run is about a 1-kilometre event for kids under 12. "Watching the enthusiasm of those kids at the start line", Luhning said, "they usually beat me over the bridge. We are going full speed and those kids are running full tilt and there is so much joy and so much excitement on their faces to be involved in that. To me it's the best part of the day."

"The kids need to register for that online too. Because the adults don't care if they get a shirt, or miss out on a popsicle at the finish line. But if I have all the children registered for the Runt Run, then they get a shirt, they get the goodies, they get the medal. My fear is that somebody comes up to the start line and they haven't registered and then we don't have enough medals, we don't have enough goodies. Kids don't understand that, when there partner next to them is getting something and they're not, so please register the kids online. The Runt Run is $10 and they get a shirt, and goodies and a medal, it's lots of fun."

"I believe the website is closed this year around the 27th or 28th, and then after that there's a paper registration online that people can print", said Luhing. "Bring it down to the park the day before the event when everybody picks up their races packages and shirt. They can register right there and get involved and run on July 1st."

"I'm still looking for volunteers. People can either message me directly or register on the website until Thursday at 6 pm. I do have a great volunteers that come back every year, but I'm still looking for people for water stations. And even just people cheering on the course, and being helpful to the participents that are there."

"Every extra dollar that we can bring into the event, gives more money back to the health foundation and that's what it's about."
