City Hall expects the work to start in the next few weeks to help control the sewer gas problem on the West Side of the city.

Work on the major sewer upgrade for the West Side of the city should start by the end of the month.

That from Moose Jaw City Engineer Ryan Johnson as his office prepares for the 5 million-dollar project designed to prevent more sewer gas problems like the residents of Stadacona west have been dealing with.

Johnson tells us the current pipes are at full capacity causing the terrible smell and health hazard.

"The intent was to re-route the sewer line so we get the industrial type waste out of the residential area. The majority of the waste coming down that line was industrial and its not normal practice to have industrial waste going through the residential area of a city."

A good portion of that waste is coming from XL Beef and includes organic matter than microorganisms feed on, resulting in the foul odour and potentially dangerous gas.
