It's the start of February and that means SGI is focusing on seatbelts and car seats for their Traffic Safety Spotlight for the month.

Last year Saskatchewan law enforcement issued over 4,700 tickets to motorists failing to wear a seatbelt or not using the appropriate car seat for kids.

Manager of Media Relations with SGI Tyler McMurchy said motorists are 17 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle if they aren't wearing a seatbelt.

"Occupant restraints is a pretty important thing to talk about whenever you're talking about traffic safety," he said. "Doing up your seatbelt is the quickest, easiest thing you can do to substantially increase your chance of survival in a crash or prevent serious injury."

The province of Saskatchewan made it mandatory for seatbelts in 1977 and SGI says according to most research more than 90% do wear their seatbelts.

"In 2019 this is not something that should happen," McMurchy said. "Seatbelts have been the law in Saskatchewan for more than four years, the fact that we saw more than 4,700 seatbelt and car seat offences reported through the monthly Traffic Safety Spotlight, it's a bit mindboggling and it kind of makes us wonder what is it going to take to make it click."

It's a $175 ticket in Saskatchewan for not wearing a seatbelt or ensuring children are properly restrained and the ticket will also cost three points under the Safe Driver Recognition program.
