Saskatchewan’s allocation of undergraduate, or college-level study permit applications for the year 2024 has been increased by 3,054 from the original 12,000 assigned by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in February.

The new total is now 15,054, which takes into account the historical acceptance rate shown by the province and could result in 7,200 total study permits for the year.

A new requirement has been put in place by the IRCC, now mandating new post-secondary international students submit a provincial attestation letter with a corresponding letter of acceptance from a post-secondary institution upon application for an international study permit.

Saskatchewan is one of the first provinces in the nation to establish an automated system to process the provincial attestation letters.

A national information technology program, MyCreds, which partners with many provincial education and post-secondary sectors, is the platform utilized to process these provincial attestation letters.

To date, the system has processed 1,200 provincial attestation letters from 11 post-secondary institutions.

A temporary pause for new applications for designation in the Saskatchewan International Student Program has been put in place. Post-secondary institutions may re-apply for designation to host international student programs longer than six months in January 2026.

Information about the federal changes to study permit processes, including exemptions, is available on the IRCC website. Details about Saskatchewan's processes can be found at studyinsask.ca
