The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health is reminding consumers to use safe food handling and cooking practices in the wake of a recent recall of Alberta beef products.  The reminder comes after 13 cases of E.Coli infection were reported in the province in the last month.

Normally, there are less than four cases reported in a given month and that has resulted in officials taking a closer look at the patients and their recent activities. Saskatchewan Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab believes some cases could be linked to the recent recall from XL Foods.

"At the moment we are investigating those thirteen cases. It looks like potentially two or three could be linked to the recall based on them having consumed items that are on the recall list." explained Shahab. "We'll know know more in a week or so after more lab testing of the samples."

For the time being, he says recalled meat products should be thrown in the garbage or returned to the place where it was purchased. He also recommends those cooking meat should wash our hands well, keep separate cutting boards for meat and other foods and cook all meat thoroughly.
