The City of Moose Jaw is reminding residents to keep their distance and stay safe around coyotes.

Coyotes have been spotted in various locations across the city and residents are asked to keep their distance as coyotes and all wildlife can be unpredictable when confronted.

It is not unusual to see coyotes in many areas of the city, especially when food and shelter are readily available.

A few tips shared by the city to safely respond to a coyote sighting are:

  • Never approach the animal
  • Look for a way out. Do not run but slowly back away from the animal.
  • Be observant of the coyote's movements
  • Act assertive by yelling and waving your arms so that the coyote maintains a healthy respect for humans.
  • Make sure the coyote has an escape route and it isn't cornered.
  • Pick up small children or dogs and keep large dogs on a leash.
  • Carry a walking stick or shake can that you can use as a deterrent when walking.

Tips to avoid having a coyote encounter in your yard include:

  • Check on small pets often when they are left outside and don't let cats roam freely.
  • Do not feed coyotes or leave food waste around accessible areas.
  • Do not feed pets outside.
  • Seal off access to decks and other sheltered spaces in your yard.
  • Close any gates to your yard and make sure any fencing is in good condition.

If you see a coyote acting unusual or aggressive, contact the city's Parks and Recreation Department at (306) 694-4447 or the Moose Jaw Police Service non-emergency line at (306) 694-7600. If it is an emergency, call 9-1-1.
