There was an attack on the record books at the Moose Jaw Invitational track-and-field meet on Saturday. Gutheridge Field was site of some stellar athletic exploits during the 2018 edition of the meet with six records falling over the course of the day.

Swift Current Comprehensive High School did most of the damage with their athletes collecting five of the six new records, including a pair set by Scott Joseph.

"It feels pretty good to break some records, including my coach's record, I feel pretty good to be honest," said Joseph after competing his crowd awing performance in the long jump.

Joseph had quite the day with four first place finishes overall. He set new records in the junior boys long jump (6.33 metres) and triple jump (13.18m), while taking top spot in the 100-metre dash (11.18 seconds) and 80-metre hurdles (16.37s).

"I've been training very hard for this season," said Joseph. "I think I can get more records this year, I want to continue doing this, I love this. I want to continue breaking records, that's what I love doing."

Joseph wasn't the only member of his team to break records during the day.

Swift Current's Kamryn Johnson broke the midget girls shot-put record with a throw of 10.51m.

In the quadralthon, Swift Current's Branden Lemay just edged out Peacock's Jackson Woloschuk in the 100-metre to break the senior boys point record with a score of 2,356 after the four events. Woloschuk was just four points off the old record of 2,290 as well.

The senior girls quad record fell as well with Estevan's Tatiana Dutka posting 2,095 points to break the old record of 1,998.

Assiniboia's Logan Fettes also had a record-setting day as he broke the senior boys triple jump record with a jump of 13.31m.

"I had a rough start, but I knew there was more in the tank and I'm glad I was able to pull it out," said Fettes.

The record breaking jump came at the end of a long day in the sun and Fettes could be seen stretching out in between jumps to stay loose. He said that made breaking the record extra sweet.

"It's awesome to break the record, I didn't quite get there last year at this meet, so it's awesome to get it this time," he said.

Fettes posted a personal best time to win the senior boys 100m hurdles with a time of 14.49s. He also finished third in the 100m dash with a time of 11.48s and second in the long jump with a jump of 5.91m.

"Very happy with the day, very good start to the year," said Fettes.

As for the local athletes, Moose Jaw had some strong performances across the board.

Some standouts included Peacock's Alexis Thibodeau, who scored three first place finishes and a second. Thibodeau showed her dominance in the sprinting events, taking top spot in the junior girls 100m, 200m and 80m hurdles.

"It was a pretty good day, good runs for the start of the season," said Thibodeau, who also came in second in the long jump.

Thibodeau placed sixth in most of her events at provincials last year and she's hoping to find her way onto the podium this year. She feels that she's on her way there.

"I feel there's still some improvement that needs to be done," she said. "I definitely need to work on my form and need to stretch more because I'm a little sore."

Central's Kienan Kleisinger finished first in the junior boys 200m dash with a time of 24.40s. He also came in second to Joseph in the junior boys 100m with a time of 11.50s.

"It was good for the second meet of the year that I've been at, felt pretty tired, but good times, good improvement," said Kleisinger. "It's not really about placement right now, just where my times are at and where I can improve throughout the rest of the season."

Kleisinger said he's focused on medalling at provincials this year and feels that this meet was a good start on the road towards that.

"I need to work on conditioning and strength over the next few weeks, those are the big things," he said.
