The Government of Saskatchewan recently announced that it would be providing an additional $40 million to the province's school divisions for the 2023/24 school year.

Funding of $20 million will be given to school divisions to address enrolment growth. An additional $20 million will be available to hire classroom and other support staff to respond to the challenges of classroom complexity.

Prairie South School Division will be receiving an additional $705,363 for classroom complexity, and a projected $275,000 for estimated enrolment growth.

Director of Education Ryan Boughen says while the extra funding is welcome, Prairie South isn't guaranteed the full amount.

"School divisions receive funding based on student enrolment numbers," he explained. "Those enrolment numbers go through a reconciliation process in September, for September 30th and then the funding is distributed to the school divisions by December. If we don't have the estimated enrolment growth, then we don't get the funds. That's the same case with all school divisions in the province."

Boughen says the division is expecting to see some enrolment growth in the upcoming school year.

"Prairie South is hovering around that 7,000 student mark. Traditionally, that's where we have been," he added.
