Moose Jaw has another food source to enjoy, as the Happy Valley Orchard was planted on Thursday.

South Central Food Security Network wanted to make another Orchard in Moose Jaw and help create more local secure food sources with the orchard we already have just off of Thatcher Drive. They helped to apply for a grant, which was funded by the Peavy Mart and the City of Moose Jaw allowed for the area to be made into the orchard, since they weren't using it.

So, the culmination of the South Central Food Security Network, Peavy Mart, and the City of Moose Jaw, along with the help of Prince Arthur Elementary School and Wakamow Valley managed to create the Happy Valley Orchard.

"I'm really excited that the Orchards getting some attention and that the kids are here and they're so excited to plant. It's going to be really great because they are going to be the perfect to be picking this orchard in the sort of three to five years once there are things to pick," said Sarah Regent, Parks Gardener with the City. "I think its going to be a great addition to the area and all around I think its a great day to have it."

Holes were already bored into the ground to make planting the bushes easier, but the trees had to wait to be planted since the ground was so hard.

The orchard has a selection of sour cherries, saskatoon berries, apples and plums, which will be ready to be picked in a few years.

After the orchard was planted and named with some help from Prince Arthur, the plan now is to water and upkeep the orchard so it will be ready to be picked sooner than later.

The new orchard is located on the 600 block of Hall St. East.
