An Assiniboia man accused of sexual assault could be facing additional charges.

The 46-year-old man appeared in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Wednesday via telephone, while his defence lawyer Estes Fonkalsrud appeared in person. The man’s name is under a publication ban that could potentially identify witnesses or victims.

Fonkalsrud told Judge Brian Hendrickson that it was his understanding the Crown was reviewing the file to see if additional charges would be laid. He believed that the police were consulting with the Crown’s office to see where additional charges could be laid.

He asked Provincial Crown Prosecutor Monique Paquin if there was a timeline. Paquin told the court that there is no estimated time of when new charges may be laid but confirmed there are talking about pending additional charges.

Fonkalsrud said his client was aware of the situation and they are willing to resolve things but need to know all of the charges to see whether a trial is needed. The case was adjourned to June 4.

The man was arrested on Nov. 27, 2023, after the RCMP executed a search warrant on a home-based daycare in Assiniboia. The Coronach RCMP had received reports in November of 2023 of historic sexual assaults.

The man is facing several sexual assault charges in connection to incidents involving three boys under 12 years old in the mid-2010s.

The charges include three counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual interference, two counts of invitation to sexual touching, three counts of making sexually explicit material available to a minor, one count of voyeurism and one count of possession of child pornography.
