The American people are heading to the polls today and many around the world, including right here at home, will be waiting anxiously for the results.

Those in Parliament will also be watching, including Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan MP Tom Lukiwski, to see who will be running one of Canada’s largest trading partners.

“We'll be waiting to see with great interest as to the results. I'm sure as everybody else in Canada will be, but it really doesn't matter in terms of government relations because we will work cooperatively with whomever becomes the next president of the United States,” Lukiwski said.

He added that there are issues that could affect Canadians from both Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

Lukiwski pointed out that Trump, during his presidency, has imposed a number of tariffs on steel and lumber that has hurt Canadian industries in Saskatchewan and across the country.

On the other hand, Lukiwski said Biden has made campaign promises to block the construction of the Keystone Pipeline and move away from oil and gas, which could have an effect on Canada’s energy sector.

“You can say one thing during an election campaign, and perhaps do quite another thing once elected,” Lukiwski said.

“So, I'm holding my breath waiting to see exactly what happens and judge and gauge the performance of each of the new candidates on exactly what they will do if either one of them is elected president.”

This election in the United States has been divisive as law enforcement in many states are preparing for the aftermath.

Lukiwski felt there is no much emotion involved in this election because Trump is such a polarizing character, but once the smoke clears Lukiwski hopes the American people can keep with tradition and get behind their president regardless of party lines.
