It was a like the scene from a movie, as time ticked down on the Ottawa Gee-Gees' first Panda Game win in five years, their fans poured out of the TD Place Stadium stands and onto the field.

Moose Jaw's Sawyer Buettner, in his first season with the Gee-Gees, was swarmed by fans and the celebration was on after a 38-27 win for ninth-ranked Ottawa over the fifth-ranked Carleton Ravens in the 50th edition of the Panda Game.

"That was neat, we were just kind of taking the knee to end the game and I look behind me and we've got a bunch of Ottawa U students running onto the field and having a good time," said Buettner. "It was something like you see down in the States and it was something fun to be a part of."

Buettner led the attack for the surging Gee-Gees, as he finished the game with five touchdowns on 16-of-28 passing for 243 yards.

It was the biggest performance of Buettner's young career on the biggest stage that he's played on in front 22,000 fans at the home of the CFL's Ottawa Redblacks.

"It was awesome, it was tons of fun," said Buettner. "The atmosphere was something that I've never been a part of, I've played in some big football games, but that was a crazy atmosphere and to come out with the win and play well too was great."

Buettner connected on two touchdown passes in the first half as Ottawa built up 17-14 lead over their rivals at halftime.

The Peacock Collegiate graduate and the Gee-Gees really took over in the second half as Buettner hit on three more scoring throws to turn a three-point halftime advantage into a 38-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Receiver Kalem Beaver finished with five catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns, while Carter Matheson also hauled in two touchdown passes and Dylan St. Pierre caught the other.

Carleton scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close the gap, but they couldn't come all the way back to give Ottawa its fourth straight win.

It's been a wild past month for Buettner and the Gee-Gees.

Buettner started the season as the backup quarterback, but he got his chance in the team's second game of the season and hasn't looked back, leading Ottawa to four straight wins.

Ottawa opened its season with a 39-21 loss to the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks and then while trailing 8-3 in the third quarter against McMaster in Week 2, they turned to Buettner, who threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead the Gee-Gees back for an 18-11 win.

Buettner went 22-of-32 for 228 yards in a 12-10 win over Guelph on Sept. 8 and he followed that up with a 238-yard and two-touchdown day in a 42-16 win over York on Sept. 22.

"We have a really good offensive system, it's a complex one, so I'm just working every week to get a better grasp of it and I’m getting better every week, but every week, there's new stuff to learn and work on," said Buettner.

With four wins under his belt and nine touchdowns to just one interception in four games, Buettner is playing at a high level, but he said he and the team need to continue improving as they get deeper into the season.

"We have a great coaching staff and a great group on offence, so it makes it easy on me, I've just got to go out there and do my job every play to the best of my ability, which is what I tried to do on Saturday and it worked out," said Buettner. "It was a big win for us, but we’ve got to put it behind us, we have a short week, so we've got to prepare and keep getting better every week.

"We'll use that win to build some momentum, but we've got to put it behind us and focus on the next opponent."

Buettner and the Gee-Gees face the Toronto Varsity Blues coming up on Thursday, 5 p.m. Sask time, at Varsity Stadium in Toronto.

In other U Sports football action from the weekend, the tenth-ranked Regina Rams secured a 32-31 overtime win over the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg on Saturday.

Rams quarterback Noah Picton set the all-time Canadian university passing yardage record with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Borsa in overtime. Picton's 11,496 passing yards surpassed former Sherbrooke quarterback Jérémi Roch for top spot all-time.

The Rams, who feature locals Maguire Abell and Jacob Laboccetta this season, are now 3-2 and tied for second in the Canada West conference.

Moose Jaw's Joel Litt-Jukes and the Saskatchewan Huskies fell 33-13 to the Calgary Dinos on Saturday as well. The Huskies are 3-2, while the Dinos lead Can West at 5-0.
