Rugby has been around in Moose Jaw for years, but now there's an opportunity to get into the sport at a younger age with Moose Jaw Mini Rugby.

Curtis DuMont with Moose Jaw Mini Rugby said there are a lot of benefits to the sport.

"It's great athletic movement for kids and low physical contact," said DuMont. "It's flag rugby, we’re looking to just learn basic movement and have fun."

The organization started up last spring and they're hoping to grow heading into Year 2.

"We had 18 kids come out pretty regularly last spring, so off with a bang," said DuMont. "It's kids 4-12 and it’s boys and girls, doesn't matter, you're all playing the same game."

The season for Mini Rugby runs every Thursday from May 2 through June 20. The registration fee is just $90.

DuMont said the players really grew to love the sport last season, "The younger ones had a great time learning how to work together, running around with the ball and they played a lot of flag tag," he said. "Our older kids, 7-12, learned how to pass and move with the ball, so that was fun to watch.

"We're hoping to keep growing and in coming years see an older group move forward in the city."

The organization will be hosting a free Try Rugby Night coming up on Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Yara Centre.
