Every team looks to hit the ground running in their season opener and that’s exactly what the Moose Jaw Bantam AA Mallards did on Wednesday night.

The Mallards smacked the cover off the ball on their way to a 15-6 win over the Regina White Sox in Baseball Regina action at Swarbrick Diamond.

"Everybody felt pretty good, there was some nerves, but overall, we did pretty good today and we just need to keep doing it," said Shortstop Evan Callaghan after the win.

Moose Jaw scored three runs in the first inning and they were off and running after that. The Mallards scored eight in the second and four more in the third to seal the win.

Coach Scott Montgomery said the team did a lot of the little things that you need to do right to have success in the season.

"We've been working hard in Yara Centre and they showed well with what we've been working on," he said.

The Mallards collected 13 hits, walked eight times and put together an overall strong offensive game over four innings. It wasn't just the offence going for the Mallards however, as their pitchers struck out six batters in the win.

"We're a good hitting team and we're good fielding team too, we've got some good pitchers and we'll probably have a good season," said Callaghan, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Cole Breitkreuz set the table in the lead-off spot for the Mallards, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, including opening the game with a triple.

The Mallards will get a chance to build off the win right away as they're back on the field on Thursday to host the Regina Blue Jays. Montgomery said that's huge for the young team, “This is our first time out on a field together, so it's nice for the guys to get a chance to bond outside of just being in Yara Centre, and it's great when you can put together a good performance in a win right off the bat,” he said.

First pitch between the Mallards and Blue Jays is at 6:15 p.m. from Swarbrick Diamond.
