David Vivian Currie was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during World War 2.

The medal was given for his actions during an offensive in St. Lambert-sur-Dives, France during World War Two. This medal is the highest military award in the British Commonwealth.

Currie was raised in Moose Jaw and attended school at King George Elementary, just across the street from his childhood home.

Aside from being awarded the Victoria Cross, the Armoury here in Moose Jaw has also been named after him.

Currie's widow sold the medal in 1989 about 3 years after his passing.

The medal was subsequently purchased for over $916,000 by an individual in England.

However, an undisclosed sum was raised by the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, federal programs, and donations from families of the North Saskatchewan Regiment in order to have the medal remain in Canada.

Thanks to those donations the Victoria Cross won by David Vivian Currie has found a permanent home in Ottawa.
