The provincial government announced $530,000 in infrastructure funding for short line railway companies in the province, including two companies in the Moose Jaw area.

Under the Government of Saskatchewan’s Short Line Railway Improvement Program, Great Western Railway in the Assiniboia, Shaunavon and Coronach area received $129,909 and Southern Rails Cooperative south of Moose Jaw received $25,000.

The funding helps assist with track upgrades and expansion, improvements to crossing surfaces and sightlines, bridge maintenance, track rehabilitations and other infrastructure projects.

The provincial grants provide up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs and are based on how much track each short line owns. Companies with less than 80 km of track receive at least $25,000. Larger short lines receive funding proportional to how much track the company operates.

In total, 13 short line railway companies operate in Saskatchewan on 2,123 km of track.
