After many years of training to save lives, Caitlyn Howe was in the right place to put her practice into action.

She explained, "I was on the med team for the Queen City Marathon.  I was at the finish line and a gentleman came across the finish line, didn't look so well and ended up going into cardiac arrest.  So I performed CPR for the first time on a real human."

As a life guard and and also being in her third year of medicine, she has had to take many life-saving certifications but until now it was just in practice.

"After years and years of lifesaving as a life guard and now in medicine.  He actually ended up being okay, so it was a really cool experience," she said, thrilled to be able to be part of a happy ending for the runner.

Caitlyn was one of a group of six to be recognized with the Rescue Recognition Award, presented by the Lifesaving Society at their Annual Investiture on April 30.

When asked about her career choice, if she thinks being a doctor is the right thing for her, she responded, ""Absolutely, absolutely.  I don't question it for a second."

She went on to explain, "I am almost done my obstetrics and gynecology rotation, I'm about to finish my third year of four for medical school.  It's really cool get to wake up everyday and know that I am doing something that I love. I'm constantly amazed by medicine, it's just the coolest specialty in the world."

She went on to explain that she springs out of bed in the morning, excited and even looks forward to the rotations that she didn't think interested her.
