Funding is sometimes hard to come by for Moose Jaw’s Canada Day Committee, but the Kinsmen Club made it that much easier this year.

On Friday, the club announced a donation of $11,500 to the Canada Day Committee to put towards the celebration.

Along with keeping the event free of admission, committee co-chair Jacki L’Heureux-Mason said the funding means there will be fireworks.

“We can guarantee that we will be able to have fireworks this year, which is a very important thing for a lot of people in Moose Jaw,” she said. “We are excited to be able to do that thanks to the Kinsmen.”

Since the committee took over planning the Canada Day celebrations three years ago, L’Heureux-Mason said the Kinsmen Club has always been involved, but this year’s donation will cover about 80 per cent of the costs.

“Their first involvement was the first year we took it on and they had given us a donation, which was awesome. Then we’d spend a lot of time running around getting other donations,” she said.

“This saves us all that effort and we are allowed to put that into planning, which is a lot more fun for us.”

Jeremy Hansen is a member of the Kinsmen Club, who also sits on the Canada Day committee. He explains why the Kinsmen Club made this donation.

“We thought it was a good time to step up and just make it so much easier on our committees so that we haven’t had to worry about looking for funds or funds not being there and not worrying about having fireworks,” Hansen said.

“We stepped up and gave the money and it’s just a win-win for both of us.”

The Kinsmen Canada Day Festivities will take place at Crescent Park with fireworks at Hamilton Flats.
