Those looking for information on the new SaskPower plant coming to Moose Jaw will have the opportunity to learn more at the luncheon on Feb. 12.

The Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce will be holding a Gas Plant and Community Opportunities Luncheon will be taking place from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Heritage Inn.

The cost is $30 and to register visit the Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce website.

Mayor Fraser Tolmie says there are currently two bids to work on the new project.

“There was two companies that have been chosen, and it’s going to come between the two who is going to win the tender,” Tolmie said.

“The recommendation from SaskPower was, if you are going to bid on some of the work, then do it for both companies, submit your bids to both companies, don’t hedge your bets on just one. They will pick between one and go from there, so the chamber of commerce will be keeping us informed with what is going on with the next stages for tradespeople.”

The city announced at the end of last year that SaskPower had acquired 110 acres of land in the industrial park. The deal was worth close to $615,000.

SaskPower made a point during that time that they wanted to keep the project local.

“They are going to local tradespeople because they want them to be a part of the build, and I’m saying Moose Jaw first, that’s what we want,” Tolmie said.

A servicing agreement was made last month that will see the city build, own and operate all water infrastructure at an estimated cost of $7.12 million. SaskPower will pay 70 per cent of the cost for future upgrades.
