Has there been an increase in impaired driving since cannabis became legal?

With one month of legalization on the books, the Moose Jaw Police Service is sharing that it's business as usual for their officers, noting that there hasn't been a spike in impaired driving in the last 30 days. However, Sgt. Kevin Pilsworth added that they don't differentiate alcohol-impaired drivers, drug-impaired drivers, or a combination of the two in the statistics that they keep as of this moment, but they are looking into it.

“Our Police Service is in the early stages of responding to the new legislation surrounding cannabis. However, it has been an offence for some time to operate a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. It is not extremely uncommon for our officers to encounter drivers who are under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. At this time, we do not have stats available that discriminate between those charged with impaired driving by alcohol alone, versus drugs, or alcohol and drugs combined. In the near future, we will be exploring methods to keep stats that will differentiate the three types of situations."

Sgt. Pilsworth said they hope that all impaired residents find a safe ride home and officers will continue to try to make our roadways safe by pursuing those who have consumed drugs or alcohol and gotten behind the wheel.
