Living heritage is all around us. It's the values, beliefs and ways of living that we inherit from past generations, use to understand the present, and make choices for the future.

That's the theme that Heritage Saskatchewan is hoping to put on display with their Summer Photo Contest. The contest was first held in 2018 and then went on a hiatus before being brought back this year.

Marieke de Roos, the communications coordinator for Heritage Sask explains why they decided to revive the initiative.

"Our Heritage Awards were cancelled and we recognized that people may have a lot more time on their hands this summer. We thought it would be a really good opportunity for people to look at heritage a little closer and come to understand its value in getting us through tough times."

With five different categories ranging from living heritage and landscapes to urban places and COVID-19 culture, the contest has lots of options for aspiring and seasoned photographers alike.

"We want to see demonstrations of how people are using culture and heritage to get through difficult times. So far we've gotten some entries of jam making...and people tapping into other old homesteading traditions."

There will be cash prizes for the winners and runner-ups of each category whose submissions will be judged by a group of professional photographers from Saskatchewan. de Roos explains how the photos will be accessed.

"Basically we're looking of course for a good technical photo but what's really more important to us is that people really capture culture and heritage."

The contest is open to all Saskatchewan residents. The deadline for entry is September 8th.
