The 14th annual 800 CHAB Family First Radiothon met and exceeded expectations for the Moose Jaw Health Foundation.

This year's goal was to raise $195,000 to purchase a new defibrillator and crash cart, chemotherapy chairs, and other items like cardiac monitors, a telemetry system, and a Holter monitor for the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Hospital. After 36 hours on the radio, over $241,000 was raised.

Kelly McElree, the executive director of the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, said the next step will be for the health foundation to go to the Saskatchewan Health Authority to let them know how much was raised and what needs to be purchased. The health authority will then go through its suppliers to get the equipment.

McElree said it could take weeks to months to receive the equipment depending on how complicated the equipment is.

"Generally, the more complicated the piece of equipment, it takes a little while longer for that because there is always some training of staff involved with that as well," he said.

At the end of the day, the radiothon raised nearly $46,000 over the goal set out by the health foundation.

McElree said those funds will be used where they are needed.

"If the hospital says that they need some additional equipment for a particular area and maybe it is an extra critical care monitor or maybe it's an extra chair for chemotherapy, they let us know and we are more than happy to provide that."

He added that is no extra equipment is needed, the funds will go towards the health foundation's next fundraising project, which is a new urology suite.
