The Moose Jaw Giants just couldn't find a way to beat the Saskatoon AGI Masters on the weekend.

Moose Jaw fell 9-1 to Saskatoon in the Softball Saskatchewan Master Men's Provincial Championship on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field.

“Hate to say it, but yeah (they had our number),” said Giants' Dave Helland. “We've played them before and we've had close ones, but unfortunately this one wasn't, so it is what it is.”

The Giants knocked off the Saskatoon Padres 12-8 in a back-and-forth game in the semifinal on Sunday morning to get into the final, but their bats went cold in the final as they picked up just four hits in the loss.

Moose Jaw lost their tournament opener 10-3 to the AGI Masters on Saturday afternoon and then bounced back to win 18-0 over the Padres in the round robin finale Saturday night.  The AGI Masters went undefeated on the weekend, winning their other round robin game 12-11 over their fellow Saskatoon squad.

“The whole weekend up until this game, we were hitting everything hard and it was finding holes, but then this game came along and we just couldn't seem to get the hits that we needed,” said Helland.

“It was just one of those games where the ball didn't seem to find the grass, that happens, but unfortunately it happened at the wrong time for us today.”

On the other hand, Saskatoon got on the bats quickly as they scored three runs in the first. They then hit three home runs in the second to take a 6-1 lead on the Giants.

A two-run home run by Tony Degerness in the bottom of the fifth – his second of the day – ended the game with the AGI Masters holding an eight-run advantage in the fifth.

It was really the tale of two games for the Giants as they connected with everything in the semifinal and then couldn't get anything going offensively in the final.

“We were down a few runs every couple of innings (in the semifinal), we just kept going, kept going up there swinging the bat and good things happened and fortunately for us we came out winning,” said Helland. “It was just one of those days where the first game, everything falls in the grass and the second game, we can't get anything through.”

The two locals teams combined together for the tournament and will now go back to battling each other in the Rambler Park Fastball League.

“We just keep playing, we've got a little bit of ball left,” said Helland. “We've been hitting the ball well, so hopefully that carries forward for both teams in the league.”

The Canadians and Giants will welcome in the NB Petro Hawks on Thursday for a doubleheader at Memorial Field. First pitch is at 7:00pm and 9:00pm.
