A former member of the Humboldt Broncos board is crticizing aspects of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s assistance program for mental health support.

Darren Duell said the timing of the program’s announcement was badly timed, coming only days after the tragedy.

The program was announced three days after the crash that killed 16 and injured 13 and included a mental health initiatives and the possibility of scholarships for the players involved. The program has raised $2.1 million and has doled out $120,000 to the Canadian Junior Hockey League for concussion protocol and $76,000 for individual counselling.

Duell was the chairman of the HumboldtStrong Community Foundation and while he doesn’t take issue with SJHL president Bill Chow or the intent of the fund, he is concerned about the transparency of how the money being spent. Several families affected by the crash have come out in support Chow and the fund.
