On Thursday Moose Jaw will be one of five stops for the Victor Walk movement in Saskatchewan.

The initiative is designed to raise awareness about childhood sexual abuse and the trauma afterwards, while also raising funds for the Breaking Free Foundation, which provides assistance for those who have suffered abuse and need finances for care.

Moose Jaw Warriors and NHL Alumni and advocate Theo Fleury is leading the charge of this movement after hearing stats released by the government that one in two girls and one in three boys have suffered sexual abuse before the age of 18.

"Even when I heard that the first time, I thought that these stats can't be real... they can't be right," commented Fleury, who is one of several victims of abuse at the hands of former WHL coach Graham James. "Being on the road 200 days of the year speaking about this subject on almost a daily basis, I realized that this stat was a bit conservative and it was more than what we thought," he added.

He noted the main purpose for bringing the Victor Walk to Moose Jaw is to create more conversations on the subject and for people suffering to be more comfortable to share their story.

"The reason why sexual abuse is so rampant is that the stigma attached to anything when you mention the word sexual... people are automatically ashamed, they're more willing to sweep behavior under the rug because the subject is so hard to talk about."

The walk and rally taking place on Thursday will finish up with a screening of Fleury's latest documentary. It features the first stages of the movement and how it all began.

"The Victor Walk movie is about the very first walk we did in 2013. Seven of us rented a couple Winnebagos and we walked from Toronto to Ottawa and we documented the entire walk."

Those wanting to join in this initiative are invited to meet for the start of the event at 825 Thatcher Drive East at 4pm, the rally will follow at 5:30pm at the Moose Jaw Funeral Home and will finish up with the screening of the documentary at 7pm.
