A partnership between the Saskatchewan Festival of Words and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is bringing 5 award-nominated and international movies to Moose Jaw.

Cineview happens twice a year in support of the Festival of Words and kicks off in Moose Jaw on Wednesday.

Operations Coordinator, Amanda Farnell, explains how the partnership between the Festival of Words and TIFF works.

"We're part of their film circuit program and they've got film circuit partners all across Canada, so it allows us to use their film catalogue from their most recent film festival, previous ones, and it allows us to bring in movies that aren't normally going to be seen in Moose Jaw."

The movies being shown at this winters Cineview are:

  • January 22 at 7:30 - 'Sometimes, Always Never'
  • February 5 at 7:30 - 'Parasite'
  • March 4 at 7:30 - 'Judy'
  • April 8 at 7:30 - 'Military Wives'
  • May 7 at 7:30 - 'And the Birds Rained Down'

Tickets to see each individual movie is $10, but as Farnell explains, there are passes available as well.

"The pass is $30 for all 5 films and its a great way to introduce yourself to something that you normally wouldn't see. We bring in a lot of movies that are nominated for Oscars and things like that, that are not normally brought in to Moose Jaw because they are not widely distributed across Canada."

And if movies arent your thing and you want to see some live entertainment instead, the Festival of Words Performers Cafe is set to get underway soon as well, with Regina hip-hop artist Big Mo performing January 30 at Mitsu Sweet Café

Farnell says anyone is welcome to perform at the cafe.

"You can come there and perform whatever you want, we've had magicians and dancers, poets and musicians, its open to everyone. Its a really great welcoming audience so you're really allowed to work on your craft and get advice from people. It's completely free so you don't have that 'barrier' to attend."

If you are unable to attend the show and open mic night on January 30, the next one is slated to take place on February 27, featuring 'Imogen Rennie'.
