The Moose Jaw Fire Department is asking us to use common sense to avoid any further grass fires in the area.

A couple of fires in the last week have firefighters on high alert. The most recent was likely caused by a human factor, although the exact cause hasn't been determined.

Fire Chief Rod Montgomery said it doesn't take much for a fire to start and get out of control.

"Really it's common sense but certainly if you're going to smoke make sure cigarette butts are put in metal containers. If you're driving, leave them in the vehicle ashtrays. Make sure they're out."

The dry conditions we are experiencing are a continuation of last fall when a lack of moisture saw a number of very serious wildfires here in the south.

Less than normal snow fall this winter didn't help the situation either.

"If there's a little bit of heat there and the wind and the right conditions, those cigarette butts can reignite and cause some significant damage," warned Montgomery, "Certainly if you're having an outdoor fire or something make sure that it's always attended and that you have a means to put it out and try to avoid burning on windy or dry days."
