Moose Jaw’s Ryan Botterill was golden again on Tuesday at the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games.

The local track and field athlete captured a gold medal for the second straight day in Estevan, winning the male 200-metre on Tuesday after taking gold in the 100m on Monday.

Botterill finished with a blazing time of 22.06 seconds, which gave him the win by 0.14 seconds over Regina’s Vaughn Taylor, who had beat Botterill in the same event at the SHSAA provincials in May.

Next up for Botterill will be the 4x100m relay with Team South West on Wednesday to wrap up his time at the Games.

Gabrielle Sanson also captured a medal in the 200m on Tuesday, picking up a silver medal in the female event with a time of 25.67s, just behind the winner Taylor Strauss from Team Lakeland who won at 25.43s.

Sanson has the 400m final on tap for Wednesday, as well as the 4x100m.

Moose Jaw’s Ryann Handley found her way back onto the podium on Tuesday, claiming a silver medal in the Triathlon Team 14-15 female division. She had won gold in the individual event on Monday.

The Team South West male basketball team – which features eight Moose Jaw players – will be playing for gold on Wednesday. Team South West topped Parkland Valley 52-44 in the semifinal on Tuesday to book their ticket to the final against Saskatoon at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

The female basketball team will be playing for bronze on Wednesday. Moose Jaw’s Caitlyn Johnson, Nylah Seaborn, Sadie Ward and Alexa Watterson lost 75-24 to Saskatoon in the semifinal on Tuesday and will now battle Rivers West in the bronze medal game at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

In female soccer, Moose Jaw’s Jayda Alix, Molly Morris, Piper Olson and Team South West will play for bronze on Wednesday after falling 4-0 to Team Saskatoon in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Team South West faces Team Lakeland in the bronze medal game at 9 a.m.

Moose Jaw’s Ray-Lyn Schmidt got off to strong start in the opening round of the female golf competition. She scored 40 points in the Stableford format, which puts her five points back of Parkland Valley’s Chloe Sies.

The second, and final, round goes on Wednesday at the TS&M Woodlawn Golf Course.

South West sits fifth in the overall medal standings with four gold and 11 medals in total, while Regina is leading the pack with ten golds and 20 medals. Prairie Central, Lakeland and Saskatoon are all tied for second at 17.
