The Moose Jaw Miller Express started off the final week of the regular season on a losing note on Tuesday night in Swift Current.

The Millers were eliminated from playoff contention on Monday night and the team couldn’t get anything going in their first game back on the field as they lost 12-2 to the Indians.

Moose Jaw wasn’t able to get on the board until the eighth inning and managed just five hits in the loss, while starter Grant Westmoreland lasted just 2 2/3 innings and took the loss on the mound.

He gave up seven runs – six earned – on six hits with four walks as his record fell to 2-5 on the year.

Swift Current opened the scoring with two runs in the second, but they blew the game open with a five-run third inning. The Indians were able to extend their lead to 9-0 with two in the fourth and then again to 11-0 with two in the seventh.

The offensive spark for the Millers came after Swift Current starter Juan Pizarro left the game. With two outs in the eighth, Brooks Benson smoked a two-run single to get Moose Jaw on the board, but that was all they would be able to muster against the Indians.

Pizarro threw seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and three walks with three strikeouts to pick up the win. Moose Jaw’s two runs came off Ryo Takenaka, who came on in relief in the eighth.

Kobe Portillo gave up two unearned runs during his inning of relief for the Millers, while Justin Beaumont went two scoreless innings and Keegan Kwong threw 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks.

The Millers will try to extract some revenge on Wednesday night when they host the Indians for the final game of the season at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
