Crop desiccation is the practise of drying down the crop, enhancing the timing for harvest, and getting it in before it gets weathered.

Ministry of agriculture's Grant McClean says many farmers choose desiccation for higher valued crops, "They are usually choosing it on high value crops like lentils, pees, chick pees in some cases, dry beans and occasionally flax."

McClean says when it comes to desiccation, timing is key, "It is going to be a challenging thing because in many cases you have to be careful not to apply the desiccant to early or you may get some yield losses or some grade losses occurring as well."

McClean says the time to desiccate varies from crop to crop.
