Moose Jaw will be sending three athletes to the SHSAA badminton provincial championship next weekend.

Cornerstone's Rung Thai won the girls singles regional championship on Saturday at Peacock Collegiate, while Central's Carter Voth and Liam Kerr picked up a second place finish in boys doubles to advance.

"I'm very happy and I feel like I've completed my purpose now, I wanted to go to provincials and now I can go," said Thai after winning the regional title to go along with her Moose Jaw city and South Central district championships.

Thai went 5-0 during regionals and didn't drop a set on her way to the title. Caronport's Melissa Ellis finished second to also advance to provincials with a 4-1 record.

In the meeting between the two locals, Thai won 21-16 and 21-11 over Ellis to finish undefeated.

"There was a lot of tough players and I am getting better from last time," said Thai.

"I'm very excited to head to provincials."

Kerr and Voth posted a 4-1 record over the day at regionals to finish second to the Leader duo of Carson Leach and Jordan Mastel, who beat the Central team in the final match of regionals in two sets (21-18, 22-20).

"I thought we did pretty good," said Voth after wrapping up. "We never set up the other team, we did what we practiced and what we can here to do and now our goal at the beginning of the season is coming true, so it's pretty good."

The loss in their final match was the only match that Kerr and Voth have dropped all season. Despite finishing in second, they feel that they're building in the right direction heading into provincials.

"At the beginning of the year, we were definitely a little rusty, especially Carter having been out for a couple of years, we had to rebuild that chemistry and at the start it was a little shaky, but over the course of the year, we got a lot stronger as a team," said Kerr.

Fox Valley's Bobby Hudec won the boys singles title, while Cabri's Dallyn Jamieson came in second to advance to provincials.

In girls doubles, Leader swept both spots at provincials with Kyla Tumbach and Payton Stimson posted a 5-0 record to finish first, while their teammates Megan Tumbach and Kerstyn Wenzel was 4-1 to come in second. Peacock's Allison Billy and Chantal Usher posted a 3-2 record and just missed a spot at provincials with a third place finish.

Fox Valley's Matthew Ganert and Kenna Anton came in first in mixed doubles with a 5-0 record. Gravelbourg's Chloe Pouteaux and Rylan Kleckner were second to also secure a spot at provincials, while Central's Ashlyn and Brendan Jesse finished in sixth place.

The provincial championship will be held this Saturday in Wilkie.
