Kenzie Behrns is putting together quite the freshman season on the badminton court.

The Cornerstone Falcon won gold at the SHSAA Badminton Regional Championship in Regina on Saturday.

"It was honestly pretty surreal," said Behrns. "I was so nervous going into regionals because there were two top girls from Regina at regionals and I knew that was going to be hard, but I made it out."

Behrns took up badminton in grade seven and has blossomed into one of the city's top players in just two years. She said her success during her first year of high school is a surprise.

"I didn't go in with high expectations of myself, I just went in to learn from the experience and play hard and just have fun and that worked," said Behrns.

"I just go out and have fun."

At regionals, Behrns rolled through her competition in the round robin, as she didn’t drop a set on her way to a 3-0 record and advanced into the playoff round as the top seed from her pool.

Behrns kept her roll going in the playoffs, beating Regina Miller's Alison Wood in two sets in the semi-final and then edging Glentworth's Mahteya Dumelie in two straight sets in the gold medal match.

She credits her coaches with helping to prepare her for the competition that she was going to face during the past week of practice, "They helped me make adjustments in-between sets to help me play smarter against girls that are stronger in their ability to smash," said Behrns.

There's one more step to go for Behrns, who will now be competing at the provincial championship in Swift Current coming up this Saturday.

"I'm super excited to play and I'm looking forward to playing at the highest level that you can play at," said Behrns.

There were five other locals on the court at regionals over the weekend.

In boys doubles, Ecole Ducharme's Oliver and Xavier Bilodeau finished in fourth place, losing to Swift Current's Jayesh Budhrani and Grady Rogers in the bronze medal game. The Bilodeau brothers had gone 2-1 in the round robin to secure their playoff spot.

Cornerstone's Zach Beital and John Ferris just missed out on the playoffs in boys doubles.

Vanier's Hayden Ma went 1-2 in the round robin in the boys singles division to just miss out on a spot in the playoff round.
