Moose Jaw’s Control Jiu Jitsu brought back 30 medals from this past weekend’s Queen City Open tournament.

The local club sent 18 fighters to the tournament in Regina and they collected four gold, eight silver and 18 bronze medals during the day on Saturday.

"I’m always happy to see them test their skills and they always do better and better each time they go to these competitions," said Control BJJ coach Jason Church.

The athletes sent by the local club to the event range in age from six to 42 years old.

Church said for some of the younger competitors, this was their first tournament and they exceed any expectations that they could have had.

"They went out and just exploded on the scene and they came home with medals, they were shocked with how well they did and us as coaches, we were just proud," he said. "We believe in what we teach these kids and we believe in each and every kid and they just amazed us."

Control BJJ is into its second year here in Moose Jaw and they continue to grow with a waiting list for the youth programs, while more and more adults take up the sport.

"We’re amazed how much Moose Jaw has taken us under their arms and our jiu-jitsu scene has just exploded, we love what we do and we love the sport," said Church.

"Jiu Jitsu will take any kid, whether you’re tall, short, wide and it equips them with the skills of self-defence and we strive to teach the kids anti-bullying."

The club has a big weekend coming up next month as they host the Saskatchewan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Provincial Championship at Yara Centre on Nov. 10.
