A busy week for city officials, as the mayor, councillors and city administration will gather inside council chambers Monday evening to discuss a number of topics. This comes just before another budget deliberation meeting this Wednesday.

Of the items discussed, you can expect to hear more on the following later this week:

- Encroachment onto city-owned property has become enough of an issue in some areas of the city that council is set to discuss the problem Monday evening.

Historically, enforced encroachment issues were on a complaint-driven basis, using Sec. 17 of the Miscellaneous Bylaw.

This process has been effective in addressing specific circumstances that the public deems a nuisance. However, it does not always allow the City to act on issues of damage to public space or misuse of public lands.

It's been recommended by city administration that all unauthorized encroachments be addressed through education and enforcement.

 - The possible implementation of a new Housing Incentive Policy based on the Housing Business Plan Update was completed by the Department of Planning and Development Services in 2018.

Recommendations include an emphasis on diversifying the Moose Jaw housing stock for continued growth and diverse population, the promotion of residential growth in key strategic areas such as the city centre, as well as a recommendation for a new ‘single-intake’ city housing incentive program and policy.

The city has a dedicated Housing Reserve account with a balance of approximately $975,000, which will continue to grow as the city sees the return on sales of further Saskatchewan Housing units.

Next week (Dec. 16), the Saskpower Plant Servicing Agreement will be discussed. Following the official opening of the Chinook Power Plant in Swift Current on Friday, the City will take another step towards the building of the new SaskPower Power plant in town, which is very similar to the plant down the road.
