It was talked about in 2009 and again in 2010 but no decision was reached. Now city administration is once again raising concerns about the Coteau Street Bridge.

The more than 100-year-old structure spans the railroad tracks and leads to the International Bible College overlooking Wakamow. Previous councillors talked about closing it to vehicles and making it a pedestrian bridge but never made a move. This council learned of the potential demolition during quarterly reports, to the dismay of Councillor Crystal Froese.

"That one is a little concerning because there are a lot of trails that go off that and into Wakamow Valley," explained Froese. "If we lose that bridge, there are a lot of people who walk the valley line there, we might end up with people going down and crossing the tracks to get back up onto the pathway."

Right now, the structure is a single lane vehicle bridge and Froese is suggesting they consider making it a pedestrian bridge, rather than see it demolished. City Engineer Josh Mickleborough says the bridge was part of their annual assessment and is showing significant signs of wear.

"We've got an assessment report that says the girders are significantly compromised and we had intended to bring a report to council as the project progressed and we can certainly do that."

Back in 2010, there was also been a lot of debate over who owns it the bridge, the railroad or the city. Mickleborough says their records show the city owns it and would be responsible for anything that happens.
