The Central Cyclones won the 59th annual Invitational senior boys basketball tournament at Peacock with a thrilling 114-98 win over Yorkton in the gold medal game.

As Central went undefeated in four games over two days, Cyclones point guard Dylan Boughen has 23 points in the final.

The team was able to keep their energy high.

“We had a good three games before us, so we came in with a lot of energy,” said Boughen. “We know that before the tournament we need to work on talking on defence and talking on offence. You could see the improvement throughout the tournament of talking on defence. We’ve been working on that and it showed today.”

In the round robin, the Cyclones won 108-79 over Estevan and 83-26 over Melfort. Then they won 73-60 over Unity in the semifinal.

The Cyclones trailed Yorkton for a few minutes in the second quarter, but Boughen explained how they were able to turn is around.

“We have to make sure we come out of a quarter strong,” he said. “We think it’s important to come out of a half or a quarter the strongest because that’s when things could turn… lots of energy putting the first quarter behind us and just focussing on the rest of the game.”

The Cyclones are off to LeBoldus for a tournament next weekend.

Peacock was also in the tournament, finishing 0-2 in the round robin before beating North Battleford Comp 78-33 in the 3rd place semi and then falling 83-78 to North Battleford's John Paul II School in their final game.
