Targets stretching the full length of a soccer field were set up at Yara Centre on a busy Saturday and Sunday.

Over 800 kids from around the province descended on Moose Jaw over the weekend for the National Archery in Schools Program Saskatchewan's Provincial Archery Tournament.

The event continues to grow bigger each year.

"We had 875 archers registered for the tournament, it comes down to 64 schools and it was like 400-and-some guys and almost 400 girls, so it was pretty even numbers," said Doug Gibson, Provincial Program Coordinator with the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation.

Students travelled from as far away as La Loche to compete in the provincial tournament.

The program is run as part of the curriculum in schools around the province and Gibson said the sport of archery is growing in popularity.

"We usually draw out of the crowd in the school with the kids that don’t play other sports," said Gibson. "There's something about archery, the kids love it and the parents like watching it too."

The kids compete in target shooting and 3D shooting as part of the provincial tournament. Gibson said the kids really build up their confidence as part of the program.

"You're standing on the line running the range and you see a kid flinging arrows, you know for sure that kid doesn't do anything else at school and when he or she hits a nine or 10, they get pretty excited and it's good to see that," said Gibson. "That makes me happy as a coordinator because the kids are having fun, I'm having fun and everyone is here for the right reasons."

Gibson added that he’d love to see the event continue to grow and possibly reach the 1,000-mark for entrants.
